A clergy, and currently church pastor of First Baptist Church Torotoro, Mowe Ogun State. Obtain a Bachelor of theology in ministry (BTH), at Baptist College of Theology Lagos, Agbowa Ikorodu, Pastor Afolabi Adeosun speaks with Timileyin Oriowo to admonish youths, on his sermon titled ‘What Kind Of Friend Are you Walking with’.
Sir, can you share more light on your sermon, ‘What kind of friend are you walking with’?
Firstly, I will like to tell you this. As an adage says, show me your friend and I will tell you who you are. Qualification of choosing a friend determine the kind of person you are. A bad person will associate with a bad friend or group, but a God-fearing person will choose a friend that is good will.
As a matter of fact, friendship is not a sin, the reality is that you need to commit your self in God’s hand and he will lead you right and even determine for you the kind of friend to walk with.
So many stories have been heard, “I got a job through my friend, we attended the same institution of learning”, also a result of friendship.
If you choose a friend who is not passionate about God, it might lead you to trouble, it could deprive you of achieving your vision, thou God owns the destiny of a man.
Those whom you call your friend you need to be observant of them, are they influencing you positively or causing you to do wrong. (Psalms 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in his law doth he meditates day and night. 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.).
Solomon’s downfall was as a result of friendship, he chooses foreign women in the land as friends, which took away his mind from God, it led to his downfall. ( 1 Kings 11:1 But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; 11:2 Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. 11:3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart. 11:4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.)
What’s your advice for the youths, especially those struggling to grow in faith?
My advice to the youth and those trying to grow in Jesus Christ is that, check your footsteps before processing your plans, through prayers, relate with people who can add value to your life physically, spiritually, and academically.
Be prayerful, always desire to hear from God, thou there are some environments that may serve as disturbances for you to serve God, but what you need is to hold on to your faith, always have the fear of God in you, remember that your body is the temple of God 1 cor.6:12-20.
A determination is a key to success, be determined and focused. Create a time daily to commune with the Lord.
There’s a lot of benefits you can derive from friendship, a friend can add value to your life if you’ve discovered a God fearing person.
But all you need is, choose Jesus Christ to be your best and he will lead you throughout your journey on earth.
